Hollister Kids has just updated this gold-medal-winning supplement, and the variety and excitement of the topics covered reminded us why judges for the Association of Educational Publishers gave this tab for Grades 4 and Up the highest EdPress honors. Breakthrough topics covered in this collection will engage students and excite them about the possibilities of science in the future. Topics include the Mars Rover landings, environmental “Red Lists,” space elevators, mummies, “smart mice,” shipwrecks, heat probes in the solar system and new studies on the effects of television on children’s attention. With this new revision, Science in the News remains more up-to-date than the newest textbooks. A Teacher Guide is available to reinforce and extend the lessons. This tab could easily be broken up and run as an in-paper series.
Sample Newspaper Activity
Machines today have many modern features that allow them to operate like robots, or to do things automatically by computer chip. Scan the ads and photos in today’s newspaper for modern machines. For each, make a list of features that make the machine modern and effective. Then list another improvement you think could be added in the future.
