Symbols of the Holidays

Cover Sample Spread
order this print and read a spread download a complete sample

Every holiday is rich in symbols. The Christmas tree. The Hanukah menorah. The harvest items of Kwanzaa. This new supplement takes a fresh look at winter holidays by examining the symbols that make them special. Holidays include 3 Kings Day, New Year celebrations of Asian cultures, the Muslim pilgrimage called the Hajj and the Hindu celebration of learning Vasant Panchami. Beyond holidays, the supplement gets students to think how important symbols are to human history, philosophy, beliefs, literature and the arts.

Sample Newspaper Activity
In the celebration of Christmas, the star is a great and powerful symbol. What do stars mean to you? Write a list of things that come to mind when you think about stars. For what things could stars be symbols today? Search the newspaper and pick an action, an idea, an emotion and a person for which a star could be a symbol. List them and write a sentence for each explaining why a star would be a good symbol. Discuss choices as a class.

Sponsor Suggestion
Diversity groups, neighborhood or community organizations, ecumenical clergy associations, colleges or universities, retail holiday advertisers (co-op sponsorships).
